Project brings the history of the city of Votorantim back to life

Good school performance and attendance are part of the requirements for participation in the teams receiving lessons. Escola de Futsal Clube Ermírio de Moraes, an indoor soccer school maintained by Votorantim Cimentos - Rio Branco do Sul unit, with the support of Instituto Votorantim in partnership with Paraná Clube, is starting another year of activities with youths from the community of Rio Branco do Sul (Paraná) today (March 7th). There 180 youths between 7 and 16 years of age have the opportunity to train the sport during the year, with lessons every Tuesday and Thursday for an hour – a place that also serves as room for school reinforcement lessons. The project, which was created in May 2002, offers these youths the opportunity of physical and social development by means of sports, aiming at their social integration. "Our basic assumption for participation in indoor soccer lessons is good school performance and attendance. Therefore they receive extra stimulus for their studies and learn to assume responsibilities", declares Mário Fontoura, Southern Regional Director of Votorantim Cimentos. The social nature of the project is emphasized by the reservation of one third of the 180 vacancies for youths from low-income families, who experience a relationship of exchange of knowledge with the other students. The boys also bank on the support of sponsors - employees and service providers of Votorantim Cimentos – who contribute toward the purchase of tennis shoes and uniforms for training. At the end of the year, to stimulate the work developed with the youths, there is a tournament divided by age bracket into three categories, in which awards are granted to the most outstanding performances on the courts and in the study. Another activity developed during the project is the monitoring of the family of the participants. A team of students works with this audience to develop professional, pedagogic and recreational education.
